Project: Kids Cards
Thanks to actions of the Newberg City Council, all youth in the area may now have a Newberg Public Library Card. As a city-funded library, all City of Newberg residents are eligible for a free library card. However, those who live outside Newberg, but in the Newberg School District, are out of any library taxing district and consequently pay a user fee for a library card. For a household, that fee is $79 annually or $40 for six months.
The Newberg City Council adopted Project Kids Card to make sure that all youth, whether they lived in the city or not, could checkout books and other materials from the Library. Dundee and rural area youth 14 and younger may receive a card at no charge which allows them to check out Newberg Library Children’s and Young Adult materials. Those in middle school and high school may apply for a Student Card for just $10 annually which expands their use to all materials in the Newberg Library. There currently is a scholarship program that pays the $10 student fee for all students.
A similar program provided by the regional library system allows youth 14 and younger, who live outside a city that operates a library, access to children's and young adult materials in any of the 18 libraries in the system. Youth who live within a city that operates a library in our system may receive a full service card at no charge.
It is important for all youth to have access to books and other library materials to build an enjoyment of reading, increase reading skills, and improve their school work. The City and the Library are happy to make this improved access possible.
